MARCH 8TH - LATE SHIFT IN THE ASTEROID BELT
Welcome to The Western Front - 120m of music, news, and views. We broadcast across the Front Range on alternate Wednesdays from 9-11 pm MT.
Audio Archive:
Sometimes we arrive at the station and realize that we have a really big show on our hands. This is one of those nights. Get ready for a fully stuffed edition of the program... overloaded with high octane audio and dripping with thick green foaming funk. Thank God for Astronauts adjust their orbit and float in for a live performance and interview with Rob Bell, 21 Dread crawls away from the sound lab long enough for a few guest DJ sets of all original beats. We'll also check in with the unique dance steps of Tumblebones, all that plus, the latest news, some free mp3's and an interview with Eddie Roberts and a special encore performance from The New Mastersounds. Joel Davis is our host, blastin' away the asteroids as we steer our craft to Intergalactic destinations.
FEATURES FOR THIS EVENING:
Thank God for Astronauts:
Thank God for Astronauts join KGNU's very own Rob Bell for a conversation and a preformance of their energetic infectious music. Thank God for Astronauts were formed in Denver, Colorado in 2000 by songwriter / guitarist Kent Phillips and bassist Steve Jones upon the demise of their previous band Kudzu Towers. It's one small step into the studio, one giant leap through the transmitter.
Guest DJ: 21 Dread:
21 Dread (pictured left after a spectacular wipe-out in the A-Basin Terrain Park) makes his way back to the KGNU studios to roll out a few excellent DJ sets for your eardrums. Tonight he'll debut two sets of all original tunes from three albums currently in production.
Contact Improvisation:
Joel Davis observes the strange world of Tumblebones. Tumblebones investigates Contact Improvisation, a movement form that explores the physics of bodies moving in contact with one another - riding momentum, balance, and discovering leverage in unexpected places.
The Free Set:
It's time once again for another installment of "The Free Set" - a set of music made up of free mp3s that you can download legally on the internet. Tonight, KGNU's John Schaefer showcases the results of his scavenger hunt. Next time will you be the one finding the tunes? Send us the links to your 12m mp3 set and maybe you'll be a radio superstar!
New Mastersounds Encore:
We're taking over the final hour tonight with a very special feature. Yes, indeed, we're going back in time for an encore performance from the extremely funky UK group The New Mastersounds. We'll have a chat with guitarist Eddie Roberts and then listen in on their killer March 2nd opening set at the Fox Theater in Boulder, CO.
